APPLICATION OF THE PED DIRECTIVE TO SAFETY VALVES
Directive 97/23/CE (“PED” Pressure Equipment Device) was approved on November 29 1999 and became a mandatory reference on May 29 2002 after a transition period.
It introduces a new reference profile to be used for the production and marketing of pressure components, contributing in creating a unique European market within which the technical requirements for the construction and use of the equipments are the same.
The PED Directive is therefore applied to the design, construction and compliance tests (Enclosure I §2.11.1) of all pressure equipments (subject to an allowable PS maximum pressure higher than 0.5 bar) and to the safety devices (art.1 §2.1.3), safety valves included, designed for their protection.
Based on their vital function, safety valves are classified in “category IV”, that is the highest risk category, and the procedure to verify the compliance with the basic safety requirements (modules), described in detail in enclosure III of the Directive, provides for the application of Modules B+D, for which:
Module B (EC type review)
The notified body carries out the required controls and, after reviewing the technical documentation of the valves and assisting to the execution of the experimental tests, declares that the safety valves examined comply with the applicable provisions of the PED Directive, by issuing an EC type certification.
Module D (Production Quality Warranty)
The Quality Control System, in addition to the compliance with the ISO 9001:2000 International Rule, must ensure the compliance of the product with the model object of the type evaluation.
The notified body approves and monitors the quality system, carrying out supervisory verifications without notice.
During the visits mentioned above, tests and controls are carried out on the product.
Our safety valves can bear the CE symbol, followed by the identification number of the notified Institution (Consorzio Pascal n.1115), only after successfully passing these inspections.
